The goal of this petition is to connect friends and neighbors of Six Corners through a common goal to beautify our community through the creative reimagining of vacant lands into public green space.
In 2021, two buildings at 4029 and 4033 N. Milwaukee Ave. in the Six Corners commercial district of Chicago were demolished following a partial roof collapse due to neglect after sitting vacant for many years. After demolition, crews picked through the rubble to salvage the much-desired Chicago brick for resale. Since then the lots have sat empty.
The local alderman stated at the time of demolition that there were "no immediate plans to redevelop the properties". Prior to the demolition, it had been over 20 years since these lots were fully occupied. The lots were acquired 6 years ago by Condor Partners who have remained silent and taken no effort to communicate with local businesses or revitalize the lots.
It is time to reimagine this land for the people of these communities. The clearing of the buildings has exposed remnants of a beautiful mid century walkway design. And despite the remaining rubble, native prairie plants are beginning to grow back. The Six Corners commercial district has no lack of vacant buildings to redevelop but severely lacks access to public green space. Public green spaces have potential to restore native prairie & wildlife, showcase local artists, provide safe spaces for young people to play, and increases the property value and quality of life for neighbors and local businesses. We all know Chicago local politics are a headache and there are always a thousand reasons to say "no" but the most powerful tool towards progress is the voice of a community.
